Mississauga Communities
Erindale
Erindale is a very special place. It was named for the estate of the First Rector of St. Peter's Anglican Church, the Reverend James McGrath, but it has not always been known by this name, having at various times been called Toronto, Credit, Springfield, Springfield-on-the-Credit, and now simply part of the dynamic city of Mississauga.
Cooksville and Dixie
Cooksville was settled by the first wave of loyalists in 1808. The newly established community of Harrisville, changed its name in 1836 to Cooksville, to honour its most prominent citizen at the time, Jacob Cook. On one hand, Cooksville benefited from the blessings and curses of any village at the time: it expanded rapidly, providing rich opportunities for the hard working settler, its agriculture and horticulture flourished in time due to the rich soil in the area left behind by the retraction of ancient Lake Iroquois, it was devastated by fire when in 1852 almost whole village was burned down, and it was greatly affacted by the bypassing of the railway which left it out of easy access. On the other hand, Cooksville is credited for being Ontario's first home for the winemaking industry. Legend has it that Johan Schiller was the first person to make wine from the native grapes that grew along the Credit River banks. East of Cooksville along Dundas Street, one can find the village of Dixie.
Streetsville
To the casual observer, Streetsville is a quaint village: But scratch below the veneer and you'll find a record of conflict. Whether it was rebels versus Tories, librarians against lawn bowlers, teetotallers controlling bootleggers, grave diggers on guard for grave robbers, or protesters pursuing the premier, Streetsville's colourful history has been anything but quiet.
Port Credit
One of the best areas in Mississauga. This is certainly as close to water as you can get. The area has great walking trails among big, hundred years old treees. If you hungry sit down on a patio outsite the the many restaurants. Choose from Italian, Franch, Greek or Mediterranean cusine. Whatever you choose you are guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face. If you are one of the lucky ones who can afford a condo in this area of the city, you will have access to everything you want within walking distance.
Meadowvale
In 1829, twenty-nie Irish families, frustrated with anti-British sentiment in Ney York City immigrated from the US to what would eventually become Meadowvale Village. This Group of early settlers was led by John and David Beatty and Thomas Graham. The new comers soon realized that the dense tracts of virgin white pine forest, when cutand sent down the Credit River to Port Credit, were highly sought after for use in the making of barrel staves. The lumber was alsoin great demand in the US and Britian. With a thriving lumber industry in Meadowvale, the population blossomed to approximately 250 people and Medowvale achieved Village status in 1836. At its peak in the second half of the 19th century, Meadowvale boasted one flour mill, one grist mill, who aw mills, a carding mill, two hotels, a wagon shop, blacksmith shop, foundry, two mercantile stores and a small school house to serve the community.
